Pope Leo XIV Delivers First Mass, Emphasizing Missionary Outreach and Humility

On May 9, 2025, Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, celebrated his inaugural Mass as the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church in the Sistine Chapel. Addressing over 130 cardinals, he underscored the Church's mission to serve as a beacon of light in a world increasingly characterized by secularism and materialism.

In his multilingual homily, Pope Leo spoke of his papal role as both "a cross and a blessing," highlighting the shared responsibility of Church leaders to spread Christianity in a skeptical world. He warned against "practical atheism," where Jesus is viewed merely as a charismatic leader, and emphasized the importance of humility in Church leadership.

Born in Chicago and holding dual U.S.-Peruvian citizenship, Pope Leo XIV brings decades of international missionary experience, particularly from his time as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru. His election as the first American and Augustinian pope marks a historic moment for the Church.

Pope Leo's choice of name honors Pope Leo XIII, known for his advocacy of workers' rights and social justice. This selection signals a commitment to continuing a legacy of supporting marginalized communities and addressing societal inequalities.

The official inauguration Mass for Pope Leo XIV is scheduled for May 18, 2025, in St. Peter's Square. As he begins his papacy, Pope Leo faces significant challenges, including internal divisions within the Church, financial issues, and the ongoing crisis of clerical sexual abuse.

His initial messages have been met with cautious optimism, with many faithful hoping that his leadership will bring unity and a renewed focus on missionary work and social justice.
