Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expects fierce competition among his players for a spot in the starting lineup for the upcoming UEFA Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur. The final is scheduled to take place at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao on May 21.
United secured their place in the final with a commanding 7-1 aggregate victory over Athletic Bilbao. In the second leg at Old Trafford, key substitutions in the 62nd minute—introducing Luke Shaw, Amad Diallo, and Mason Mount—sparked a turnaround from a 1-0 deficit to a 4-1 win. Mount, returning from a long-term hamstring injury, scored twice, while Diallo, recently back from an ankle injury, assisted Rasmus Højlund's goal.
With the potential return of Matthijs de Ligt and Diogo Dalot from injuries, Amorim could have a near full-strength squad for the final. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high-intensity training sessions, stating, "Of course, they will fight for the places. They will be ready, excited. And that is the good thing, not just the final, but also to prepare the games of the Premier League, with something in our mind that we can win. It’s going to be massive."
Despite United's three defeats to Spurs this season, including one in the Carabao Cup, Amorim remains optimistic. He plans to manage player fitness carefully, especially for those returning from injuries, and is considering cautious rotation in the upcoming Premier League match against Chelsea to ensure readiness for the final.
The Europa League final presents an opportunity for United to secure silverware in an otherwise challenging season, offering a chance to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League.
